Helping iLA Turn Digital Momentum into Strategic Direction

Every organisation reaches a point where momentum alone isn’t enough.

For iLA, that point came after significant investment in digital platforms, modern websites and emerging AI initiatives.

Progress was evident across the organisation. New digital services were being launched, AI pilots were underway and teams were embracing new ways of working.

The question facing leadership wasn’t whether to continue investing.

It was where to focus next.

Rather than relying on instinct or individual projects, iLA wanted an independent view of its digital and AI maturity – one that could identify strengths, uncover capability gaps and provide a practical roadmap for future investment.

That’s where Dovetail Digital came in.

Executive Summary

iLA had already established strong digital momentum through platform modernisation, new digital services and early AI initiatives. Leadership recognised the opportunity to build on that progress but wanted greater confidence that future investment would be directed towards the areas of greatest organisational value.

Dovetail Digital undertook an independent Digital & AI Maturity Assessment, providing an evidence-based view of current capability, benchmarking organisational maturity and identifying practical priorities for future investment. The resulting roadmap became the foundation for iLA’s future digital and AI planning.

The Situation

iLA supports older Australians and people living with disability through a range of digital services and community programs, including LiveUp, KeepAble and AtChat.

The organisation had already invested heavily in modernising its digital environment. Websites had been re-platformed, mobile capability was expanding and several AI initiatives were beginning to demonstrate real potential.

There was no shortage of momentum.

The challenge was ensuring those initiatives formed part of a coordinated strategy that would continue delivering value as the organisation evolved.

The Business Decision

As digital investment accelerated, leadership recognised that technology alone wouldn’t determine success.

The organisation wanted an objective understanding of:

Rather than commissioning another technology review, iLA sought an independent perspective that would help leadership make better long-term decisions.

Creating Clarity

Dovetail Digital conducted an independent Digital & AI Maturity Assessment designed to evaluate the organisation as a whole – not simply its technology.

Through stakeholder discovery, organisational analysis and external benchmarking, we examined the people, processes, governance, data, technology and organisational practices that influence digital capability.

The objective wasn’t to produce another report.

It was to provide leadership with the clarity needed to confidently determine where to focus next.

Every recommendation was practical, prioritised and aligned to iLA’s strategic direction.

What We Found

Rather than uncovering an organisation struggling with digital transformation, the review identified something far more encouraging.

Strong momentum already existed.

The next opportunity wasn’t more technology.

The greatest opportunity lay in strengthening the organisational foundations that allow technology investments to scale successfully.

This included:

In other words, the next stage of maturity was less about introducing new tools and more about creating the organisational capability to maximise the investments already made.

The Road Ahead

The engagement provided leadership with more than an independent view of current capability.

It established a practical roadmap that aligned digital priorities with organisational objectives and created greater confidence in future decision-making.

Rather than treating digital initiatives as individual projects, leadership now had a structured framework for prioritising investment, strengthening governance and continuing to build digital and AI capability over time.

The roadmap became the foundation for iLA’s future digital and AI planning.

Why This Matters

Digital transformation rarely stalls because organisations choose the wrong technology.

More often, it slows because priorities become fragmented, governance struggles to keep pace with innovation or organisational capability doesn’t develop as quickly as technology itself.

Independent assessments create the space to step back, evaluate progress objectively and make better decisions before significant investment is committed.

For organisations already investing in digital and AI, that clarity can be just as valuable as the technology itself.

What Other Leaders Can Learn

Many organisations find themselves in a similar position.

Digital initiatives are progressing.

AI experimentation has begun.

New platforms are being introduced.

The question isn’t whether digital transformation is happening.

The question is whether every initiative is moving the organisation towards a common objective.

Before launching the next project, executive teams should ask themselves:

Those questions often provide greater value than choosing the next technology platform.

iLA Project Lead Jaime C. said:

“The assessment gave us an independent perspective on where we are today and a practical roadmap for where we should focus next. It helped us align future digital and AI investment around clear organisational priorities and gave leadership greater confidence in our planning.”
